Updating CA DMV's mobile experience.

Project Overview

I led the UX/UI redesign for the California Department of Motor Vehicles' (DMV) official mobile platform, improving access to critical state services for millions of residents.

The Challenge

California needed to catch up with digital modernisation, having lagged behind other states in adopting Real ID and digital driver's licenses. This need was amplified by the existing mobile solution, which user research confirmed was a source of widespread frustration due to its complex user experience and the inability to quickly find essential services.

My Approach

I initiated the project by conducting an in-depth analysis to categorize and define essential services. Through regular engagement with the CA DMV team, I explored and validated strategic options, leading to the rapid development of prototypes.

For collaborative design and testing, I established a shared Figma environment. The DMV team utilized this space to identify core pain points, allowing us to co-create solutions. Using their feedback, I quickly narrowed the field to a shortlist of high-potential concepts, enabling internal teams to easily test the proposed designs and provide targeted input.

The Solution

The final design successfully merges multiple service ideas into a cohesive, modern experience. The interface empowers users with critical functions, including RealID sign-up, vehicle registration renewal, and secure login via biometric verification.

The landing page was designed with simplicity as the guiding principle, featuring a more user-friendly headline to make the application instantly approachable. To address information overload, I curated the four most-used services and presented them as large, distinct tiles on the home screen. Consolidating the remaining services within a hamburger menu significantly reduced the user's cognitive load. This holistic approach, completed by the personalized "My DMV" section, delivers a user experience tailored for speed and efficiency.

Accesibility

This design meets the WCAG 2 Level AA standards.

The Impact

These user-centric improvements were immediately embraced by the audience, resulting in a measurable increase in the app's score on major app stores.
